Key hiring trends among Canada’s leading blue-chip companies and Small-Medium Sized Enterprises. Released: September 2008
Despite some softness in the economy, particularly in Central Canada, Sapphire Canada still received over 7,500 requirements for both permanent and contract IT placements in the first two quarters of 2008. In the East, requirements rose 14% over this time last year and the West saw an increase of 23%
In our most recent survey, 88% of our clients still said they were concerned about attracting top IT talent. The pool of IT professionals in Canada is still not growing at the same pace as demand. Where the overall market may be softening, demand is still strong in IT nationally.
The other interesting trend we’re seeing at Sapphire Canada is a dramatic increase in the demand for IT architects, up 50% over the first half of 2008. This is generally seen as a positive indicator for future increases in demand as architects are hired prior to the development and implementation of IT projects.
